How to Become a Security Guard in Ontario

Step 1: Ensure You Meet All Requirements

A security guard license allows you to work in a job where you primarily protect persons or property. This includes roles such as:

  • Security guard
  • Concierge
  • Bodyguard
  • Bouncer
  • Loss prevention employee

To qualify for a security guard license in Ontario, applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada (Government of Canada Work Eligibility)
  • Have a clean criminal record, as specified by Ontario Regulation 37/08 under the Private Security and Investigative Services Act, 2005 (Ontario Security Licensing)
  • Be able to pass the Security Guard Test (government-regulated)
  • Comply with the Ontario Security Guard Code of Conduct (Code of Conduct)

If you are currently licensed from another Canadian province or territory, you might be exempt from Ontario training and testing.

Step 2: Complete a 40-Hour Security License Training Program

Both in-class and online training options are available. All basic training courses must be at least 40 hours long and include certification in first aid.

First Aid and CPR Training

To be eligible for a security licence, you must have valid first aid and CPR certification.

  • Minimum Required Level: Emergency Level First Aid and Level A CPR (1-day training)
  • Recommended Level: Standard First Aid and Level C CPR (2-day training), which provides additional knowledge and skills.

Training providers must be approved by the Ministry of the Solicitor General. A list of approved providers is available on the Ontario Security Training website.

Once you complete the training, you will receive a Training Completion Number (TCN), which is required to register for the Security Guard Test.

Quality Online Security Guard Training

We offer an Ontario Ministry-approved 40-hour security guard training program, designed to go beyond traditional coursework. Our training features:

  • Video lessons, quizzes, and real-world scenarios for practical learning.
  • A Training Completion Number (TCN) upon successful completion.
  • A strong foundation in security operations to prepare candidates for real-world challenges.

Step 3: Pass the Security Guard Licensing Exam

The Ontario Security Guard Exam is a multiple-choice test consisting of 60 questions. To pass, candidates must score at least 62% (37 correct answers). The exam fee is $66.50 + HST ($75.15 total).

Step 4: Apply for Your Security Guard License

Once you pass the exam, you can apply for your security guard license through ServiceOntario either online or by mail. The application process requires:

  • Completed application form
  • Passport-quality photograph
  • Valid identification
  • Training Completion Number (TCN) and exam result details

The application fee is $80, and processing typically takes up to 30 days. Online applicants receive a digital license that can be used as proof of licensing until the physical card arrives.

Step 5: Apply for a Security Job

With a valid security guard license, you can start applying for positions. Every company offers different opportunities, so choose one that aligns with your career goals.

At Nobleton Security, we value training, professional development, and career growth.
